The construction of a permanent Alpha base took a big step forward today with the joining of Alpha 1 and Alpha A4 by a pressurised walkway linking the two upper levels. Maria Dicello, the mission specialist for the habs, was the first to walk from one to the other and declared it to be a major step forward in the human habitation of Mars.
The crew are delighted by their new living space - which will also include a reorganised lower for workshops and storage.
In other news, it has been reported today that the automated reconnacance balloon (ARB) has crashed somewhere on Tharsis. This is a huge loss given the data being collected. A second ARB is due to arrive on a future mission. Until then, the team will be limited in their range of observations.
